Chautauqua Institute Planned 2010 Events

Since 1874 when the Chautauqua Institute was founded by an Akron Ohio inventor and a Methodist Bishop people have been enriched and enlightened each summer.

Chautauqua hosts a nine week season that runs from June to the end of August with weekly themes that encompass the four pillars; arts, education, religion and recreation.

Located in western New York the Chautauqua Institute resides in the quiet small town of Chautauqua and whether on season or off season holds dear in the hearts of nearly all who meander the quiet tree lined brick pathways.

Though every year since the beginning Chautauqua Institute planned events have nurtured entertained and edified the residents as well as visitors alike.

The planned 2010 events are no exception with some remarkable and amazing things taking place making a full nine week schedule! The nine weeks bring us nine different themes and related events, one for each week, and are as follows:

- Roger Rosenblatt and More Friends and Eternal Life: A New Vision provides the theme for the first week beginning June 27, 2010. Award winning actor Alan Alda will be among the speakers this week.

- Ethics of Leadership is the theme for week two beginning July 4, 2010. On America’s Independence Day the Air National Guard Band of Mid Atlantic Concert Band can be enjoyed. A number of important and influential speakers will be heard this week as well as Tim Conway and Friends entertaining and making spirits light.

- From Asia to the Middle East: Energy, Capital and Conflict and Women of the Middle East are the themes for the week beginning July 11, 2010. Pakistan Ambassador to the United States Husain Haqqani will be among the speakers along with the theatre production ‘You Can’t Take it With You’ for entertainment.

- Nuclear Power and Nuclear Weapons: The Right to Have and to Hold and Nuclear Disarmament are the themes for the fourth week beginning July 18, 2010. Again people will be entertained with the theatre production of ‘You Can’t Take it With You’ and they will be enriched with speakers such as Ambassador Sergio Duarte and William Heyen.

- Picture This: Photography and The Ethical Dimensions of Photography is the theme for the week beginning July 25, 2010. Photojournalists Steve McCurry and Paolo Pellegrin along with space photographer Margaret Geller will be among the speakers this week.

- Excellence in Public Education and Public Education: a Moral Imperative will be the theme for week six beginning August 1, 2010. This week is packed with the arts and entertainment, important speakers and includes an evening with Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard American Idol success stories.

- Sacred Spaces and Sacred Space: Jerusalem provides the theme for the week beginning August 8, 2010. Award winning documentary filmmaker Ken Burns will speak as well as Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Goldberger and others. ‘Macbeth’ is the theatre entertainment beginning at the end of this week.

- Powering the Future and Powering the Future: An Exploration of the World’s Religions is the theme for the week beginning August 15, 2010. ‘Macbeth’ continues in the theatre through the week among the entertainment. A number of speakers will enlighten and enrich as well as educate during this powerful week at the Institute.

- The Supreme Court and The Supreme Court: Issues of Justice and Personal Rights is the theme that concludes the 2010 season at Chautauqua Institute. An amphitheatre special concludes this final week and the season.
